"Many women today feel a sadness we cannot name. Though we accomplish much of what we set out to do, we sense that something is missing in our lives and - fruitlessly - search 'out there' for the answers. What's often wrong is that we are disconnected from an authentic sense of self." - Emily Hancock
Tell me about it.
Sarah agreed with Emily, saying we are sad because "we miss the woman we were meant to be. We miss our authentic selves."
How can we miss something or be disconnected from something unless we once had it or were connected to it? Sarah says she's always been there, your authentic self, whispering things to you...and even though you haven't listened she's still there.
"Listen to the whispers of your heart. Look within."
Honestly, it sounds a little crazy. But is it? Is it really?
Is it really that crazy to think that you are not yet who you want to be but that you could live an authentic life if you just start to listen to yourself?
I believe that authentic self she talks about is your spirit, your soul, that is eternal and existed before it was paired with your body and will continue to exist after it leaves your body. It is you, your essence, your self...
"Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee" - OT
How or what did God know before we were born? Our spirits (a "duh" seems appropriate there, but for people that don't share my beliefs that's probably inappropriate).
Reading "out there" from the Emily Hancock quote automatically made me think about Hello Dolly. I love musicals, and I went back and listened to it again, and what do ya know...they are totally on a journey to find their authentic selves. They realize they aren't living a fulfilling life and decide to change that and they start by listening to what their hearts are telling them they want to do and they go and do it! And of course, get all dressed up to give them some courage.
It's funny how you start to see how some of the best stories are all about how a person comes to find their true self...I wonder what my story will look like at the end of this year.
What about your story?
